Angel anatomy

As often as I see pictures of angels I am bugged by the fact that they don’t look right. Most artists just stick a pair of dove’s wings on the back of a bodybuilder and expect it to fly, but what’s the chance of that ever getting airborne?

I wanted something more credible, so I looked at bird design (and what amazing design it is!) and tried to incorporate something similar in an angel (bearing in mind that they must have six limbs).

These illustrations are my humble (and time-constrained) efforts. As you can see, I did away with a lot of body weight and focused instead on building the wing structure, which requires some humongous muscles. At the same time I wanted to retain a human-like form as far as possible. It has to look friendly and not deformed.

You will probably say that real angels don’t look like this. So please tell me about what you saw.

My conclusion? Whatever they are; however they look; I have a deep respect for angels. Angels rock!
